Reacting to the news of the suspension of the Headmistress of Okotie-Eboh Primary school 1, Sapele over alleged extortion and collection of illegal fees from pupils and chasing them home for same, The director General of Revive Africa Initiative, Amb. Ugagaoghene Ogheneyole speaking to newsman in Asaba On Monday the 18th of March, 2019. Charged the commissioner for basic and secondary education Hon. Chief Ebie to as a matter of necessity set of a discrete panel of enquiry to investigate the activities of all Principals and head of schools across Delta state to ascertain how many of them who are involved in the collection of illegal fees, extortion and sabotage of government policies. He stated that in such sensitive matters regarding corruption in public service especially to the detriment of the poor masses, the commissioner is expected to exemplify good governance by being thorough and comprehensive in his actions.
"You can not just single out the Headmistress of a school and suspend hwe because the video that went viral is pertaining to a student from her school, this revelation should prompt you to investigate all your principals and head of schools" he said.
According to him, majority of the Principals and head of of primary schools in Delta state are involved in the same illicte practices, schools in Asaba inclussive. Therefore if the ministry must convince the Public that they are not party to this monumental corruption and sabotage of government policy, they should be very thorough and comprehensive in their investigations and actions. Many schools impose as much as three thousand Naira on the students and pupils.
It is not enough for the commissioner to single that very headmistress out and punish, he should make effort to fish out all the people involved in such practices across the state and punish them according.
There is too much decay in the public sector and this is an ample opportunity to sanitize the system.
I hereby urge the Governor of Delta state to pass and executive order to the commissioner to investigate all the activities of head of schools and principals in public schools across Delta.
In conclusion, And. Ugagaoghene Ogheneyole, noted that they public is watching keenly to see how things unfolds.
